On its website, Netflix said it chose France to test its first linear channel due to the “consumption of traditional TV [in France].”
“In France, watching traditional TV remains hugely popular with people who just want a ‘lean back’ experience where they don’t have to choose shows,” said Netflix.
“We’re trying a new feature for our members in France — called ‘Direct.’ Maybe you’re not in the mood to decide, or you’re new and finding your way around, or you just want to be surprised by something new and different, said Netflix.
My bet would be that this rolls out to the world at some point. Because the lure of ‘lean back’ is hardly just a French thing. It may be more popular there relative to Netflix ‘everything under the sun’ model, but in our age of content abundance, not only do curators become king, but I tend to think de-facto choices do in a way as well.
