So, essentially: Netflix dominates series while Disney dominates movies. And re-runs of older content (on Netflix) dominates both. But the latter also shouldn’t be too surprising since it’s in aggregate and those older shows have far more episodes to stream than the newer entrants. More interesting will be to watch how this trends going forward (this is the first year Nielsen compiled this list) — in particular, with The Office now having moved to Peacock, we’re about to see just what the power dynamic is there…

My guess would be that we still see Netflix dominate the list because they have scale and Peacock does not (at least not yet). Disney+ is clearly getting to scale too, but The Mandalorianwhich is fantastic — still would have been outside the Top 10 of the combined list (as would have Frozen 2).¹

This also all speaks to the power of Netflix to “resurrect” and in many cases boost old shows to new levels of popularity. As Netflix continues to cancel shows, it will be interesting to see if some other streaming service does does that to their content (unless they control the rights to the IP, including future works, even after cancellation)…

¹ Per NYT: “Nielsen reported viewership for Netflix, Disney+, Hulu and Amazon but has not yet released figures for Apple TV+, HBO Max or Peacock.” — but this presumably would not have changed the list because again, Netflix and Disney+ are the only ones with real scale yet.
